Two learners win environmental journalism awards

Two South African learners have won national honours in the 2026 Young Reporters for the Environment competition run by WESSA.
Twelve-year-old Alyssa Govenden from Gauteng won the podcast category for her piece on food waste and its link to climate change and hunger.
Thirteen-year-old Palesa Mosegedi from the Northern Cape took top prize in photography for an image of learners harvesting vegetables from a school food garden.
Both winners will now represent South Africa in the international round of the competition.

Elevate Her Africa expands sanitary pad support

Elevate Her Africa is aiming to provide sanitary pads to 2 000 women a year, expanding its current distribution programme in Alexandra.
The organisation recently supplied a year’s worth of sanitary products to 10 women.
Founder Marie Kasongo says the goal is to scale the project across South Africa and other African countries to improve menstrual health access and reduce costs for low-income women.
The programme encourages beneficiaries to eventually support others, creating a cycle of community assistance.

Cape Cultural Collective raises R50 000 arts

The Cape Cultural Collective raised R50,000 for community arts at its Darling Buds of May fundraiser held in Wynberg on 9 May 2026.
Performers including dancers and musicians from local arts groups delivered Amapiano, contemporary dance and jazz performances during the event.
The programme highlighted themes such as gender-based violence, children’s rights and social cohesion through the arts.
Funds raised will support the Cape Cultural Collective’s ongoing community arts projects.
