Education at the Core of Africa Day Celebrations
Story 1
Education took centre stage at Africa Day celebrations held at Freedom Park in Pretoria, with leaders highlighting its power to transform the lives of the continent’s children and unlock long-term economic growth.
Under the theme “Building the Africa we want through solidarity, equality and sustainability,” the event blended music, cultural performances, and official addresses.
Gauteng Health MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko called for a broader view of education—beyond the classroom—while this year’s Africa Month continues to promote unity, heritage, and sustainable development.

SA Strikes Gold at Chelsea Flower Show
Story 2
South Africa has once again dazzled the world, winning a gold medal at the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Chelsea Flower Show in London—its 39th gold in 44 years.
Designed by Leon Kluge, this year’s garden celebrated the meeting of the Indian and Atlantic oceans, using more than 25,000 stems of fynbos and other indigenous plants.
On top of the gold, South Africa also took home the Lawrence Medal, awarded to the best floral exhibit across all RHS shows for the year.
The garden will be rebuilt in Stanford in the Western Cape this spring, giving South Africans a chance to enjoy the award-winning display at home.

Gauteng Department Tackles Overcrowding at Ivory Park’s Eqinisweni Secondary
Story 3
The Gauteng Department of Education is stepping up efforts to improve learning conditions at Eqinisweni Secondary School in Ivory Park.
Originally built for 1,600 learners, the school now serves around 2,700, putting significant pressure on its facilities.
To address overcrowding, the department has delivered 10 mobile classrooms and begun repairing existing infrastructure.
This comes after ActionSA MPL John Moodey’s visit in February, where he highlighted concerns about the school’s situation.
Education officials confirm that both immediate and long-term plans are underway to provide a safe and supportive environment for learners and teachers.
