Sandton pensioner finds healing through crochet and giving back
Story 1
Sandy de Goede from River Club in Sandton has turned to crochet as a source of healing and purpose after the loss of her husband.
The 78-year-old joined the KnitWits 4 the Needy group at Rosebank Union Church, where volunteers create blankets and clothing for underprivileged communities in Johannesburg. Over the past four years, she says crochet has helped her rebuild her sense of connection while contributing to those in need, especially during the city’s cold winter months.
De Goede encourages others to explore hobbies and community work, noting that it can provide friendship, purpose, and a way to give back at any age.
