Francois Pienaar has been awarded an honorary doctorate by University of Johannesburg, recognising his contribution to sport and national unity.
Pienaar famously captained the South Africa national rugby union team to victory in the 1995 Rugby World Cup, a defining moment in the country’s history.
The university says the recognition also reflects his leadership on and off the field, including inspiring future generations.

Patrick Bowman runs 100 kilometres to fund surgery for a child

Cape Town athlete Patrick Bowman pushed his body to the limit, completing 100 kilometres in 15 hours at The Prom Backyard Ultra to raise funds for the Smile Foundation.
The 25-year-old ran 6.7 kilometre loops every hour to support a child in need of corrective surgery for a cleft lip or cleft palate. His effort raised over R30 000, enough to fund the life-changing procedure.
Bowman’s determination inspired friends, family, and the wider community, demonstrating the impact of dedication, endurance, and generosity in transforming lives.

Johannesburg organisations Woodrock Animal Rescue and 67 Blankets recently came together to celebrate their shared mission of giving back to communities.
The meeting took place at Carolyn Steyn’s home and included guests Stella Meldau and Jacqui Martheze. Woodrock brought a donation of blankets in support of 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day, a movement founded in 2013 to provide warmth and care to vulnerable communities.
During the visit, both teams shared ideas, learned from each other’s work, and highlighted the ongoing impact of their initiatives in communities across South Africa.
