Pretoria after care founder honoured as Winter Hero

A Pretoria woman who has spent 13 years supporting vulnerable children has been recognised as a Halls Winter Hero.
Thokozile Vukela, founder of the Mbonane Community Organisation in Nellmapius, provides meals, homework support and a safe space for more than 100 children after school.
The recognition comes as the City of Tshwane has allocated land for the organisation, helping move plans for a larger after care centre a step closer.

Cape Town hiking community rebuilds Silvermine lookout after fire damage

A hiking group and volunteers in Cape Town have helped rebuild the Blackburn Ravine lookout deck in Silvermine after it was destroyed during recent fires.
Members of the Walkie Talkies hiking group raised funds for the rebuild before working with Friends of Table Mountain, SANParks Honorary Rangers and other volunteers to restore the structure.
The rebuilt lookout once again allows hikers to enjoy views over Hout Bay and the Peninsula, after a hands on community effort to bring the landmark back to life.

Underserved school learners showcase engineering projects in Johannesburg

Fifty-five learners and eleven teachers from underserved schools are presenting engineering and technology prototypes at the Young Engineers Movement Hackathon Exhibition Day in Johannesburg today.
The five day programme, hosted by ORT South Africa in partnership with Hudaco, has focused on coding, engineering, prototyping and problem solving using sensors and microcontrollers.
Learners have worked in teams throughout the week to build working solutions to real community challenges, while teachers received hands on training to support STEM learning in classrooms.
The initiative aims to strengthen early access to engineering and technology skills and prepare young people for opportunities in the innovation economy.
