Underserved school learners showcase engineering projects in Johannesburg

Fifty-five learners and eleven teachers from underserved schools are presenting engineering and technology prototypes at the Young Engineers Movement Hackathon Exhibition Day in Johannesburg today.
The five day programme, hosted by ORT South Africa in partnership with Hudaco, has focused on coding, engineering, prototyping and problem solving using sensors and microcontrollers.
Learners have worked in teams throughout the week to build working solutions to real community challenges, while teachers received hands on training to support STEM learning in classrooms.
The initiative aims to strengthen early access to engineering and technology skills and prepare young people for opportunities in the innovation economy.

UNICEF is helping keep education going for refugee children in northern Ghana by providing “School in a Box” kits to local schools.
The portable kits include basic classroom supplies such as exercise books, pencils, crayons, chalk, rulers and simple teaching materials, allowing lessons to continue even where resources are limited.
