SA Climber Climbs for GBV

South African mountaineer, philanthropist, and Brand SA ambassador Angela Yeung reached the summit of Mount Everest on 24 May via the challenging North Side route. Her climb was part of a broader campaign through her non-profit, the Impilo Collection Foundation, to support survivors of gender-based violence (GBV). Yeung aimed to collect 8,849 bras — one for every metre of Everest — as a symbol of dignity and solidarity for survivors. Yeung says Each bra that is collected is a message that victims of GBV are seen, valued, and deserving of dignity. SOUND

Sandton Theatre Shows Athol Fugard Best

Sandton Theatre on the Square hosted the official opening of Athol Fugard’s Master Harold… And The Boys. The event drew a packed audience of theatre enthusiasts, performers, and critics, all attending the first performance of the newly staged production directed by Wa rona See ane.The play, originally written in 1982, is set in apartheid-era South Africa in 1950 and is based on Fugard’s own experiences growing up in Port Elizabeth. It examines the effects of  racism through the relationship between a white teenage boy and two Black men employed by his family. Athol Fugard was regarded as one of South Africa’s most influential playwrights, wrote numerous works highlighting the personal and political struggles of life under apartheid.

Kirsty Coventry has made history after she was inaugurated as the first woman and first African president of the International Olympic Committee on the organization’s 131st anniversary on Monday.Coventry is a seven-time Olympic medalist and Africa’s most decorated Olympian and has served on the IOC Athletes’ Commission and Executive Board.The medalist officially assumed office this week following a seven-candidate election in March.
