SPAR Proteas turn netball win into period poverty support
Story 1
After defeating the England Roses 2–1 at the recent SPAR Challenge in Johannesburg, South Africa’s national netball team, the SPAR Proteas, used their victory to give back.
As part of SPAR’s #EndPeriodPoverty campaign, every goal scored translated into a donation of SPAR Petals sanitary pads.
The 166 goals scored in the series, plus 20 bonus goals from spectator activations, resulted in 1,860 packs of sanitary pads being handed over to the Ubuntu Social and Community Development Club’s 600 Project 2026.
The initiative will help 155 schoolgirls in vulnerable communities stay in school by reducing missed days due to lack of sanitary products.

Finley the Loggerhead Turtle on the Road to Recovery
Story 2
Finley, a loggerhead turtle rescued in December in Richards Bay, has moved from critical condition to stable under the care of the South African Association for Marine Biological Research (SAAMBR).
When rescued, Finley was underweight, lethargic, and had a dangerously low blood count.
Thanks to a carefully managed blood transfusion and ongoing rehabilitation, she has gained weight, become more active, and is now in a larger pool being monitored alongside other loggerheads.
SAAMBR’s team remains hopeful that Finley will eventually return safely to the ocean, showing that expert care and compassion can give vulnerable wildlife a second chance at life.
