Grandmothers’ legacy inspires community knitting day

Community Hours and 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day brought people together at Cedar Square in Fourways for a day of knitting, crochet and giving back.
The event celebrated World Granny Square Day, with guests making squares and blankets while enjoying a movie together.
Some of the handmade pieces will be combined into blankets and donated to people in need.
The day was inspired by Community Hours founder Sarah Welton-Blake’s memories of the handmade jerseys her grandmothers created for their grandchildren.

Young scientists develop solutions to South Africa’s water losses

A team of young scientists and water professionals has won the 2026 Wetskills South Africa Water Challenge for developing a solution to reduce water losses.
The programme brought together 25 participants from South Africa, Lesotho and the Netherlands.
The winning team, WaterWatch, includes participants from Sol Plaatje University, Rhodes University, Rand Water and uMngeni uThukela Water.
Their proposal brings communities, municipalities and other partners together to identify leaks, illegal connections and other causes of water loss.
Sol Plaatje University master’s student Bingiwe Mabena, who was part of the winning team, says the programme will also help increase accountability.

Skipnation brings rope skipping competitions to communities

Gymnastics South Africa is taking its Skipnation competition into communities across the country, with 12 clubs hosting events in seven provinces this month.
The competitions give young athletes a chance to test their speed, skill and stamina in Basic Jump, Speed Run and Double Under.
Schools are also getting involved, while the same judging and scoring system is being used nationwide to keep the competition fair.
The initiative aims to encourage more young people to stay active and develop their skills through sport.
