At just 17, Liberty Sibanyoni from Greenside High School is quickly emerging as one of the school’s top chess talents. He reached the position of second-highest ranked player just two years after first learning the game. Sibanyoni only discovered chess in Grade 9 through curiosity, later teaching himself by watching videos and studying the game in his free time.Sibanyoni has participated in school tournaments that span several days and has represented Greenside High in local chess leagues. One of his proudest moments came when he defeated a teacher he had long admired.

De Rustica Olive Estate has claimed first place at the inaugural NOVA Awards 2026 in Spain for its Estate Collection Favolosa extra virgin olive oil.The product was evaluated against international entries on new olive cultivars and production quality. Judges assessed aroma and taste profiles before awarding the South African oil the overall top prize.The win highlights South Africa’s growing presence in the global olive oil industry, even as it produces smaller volumes than leading producers such as Spain.

A free home-based care training initiative in Alexandra is helping to address youth unemployment by strengthening support for vulnerable communities in need of caregivers.The programme, led by Gift of Day in partnership with Sibongile Home Based Care, has launched its second phase. It offers an eight-week certified course that equips young people with practical skills in home care, nursing and community support.More than 70 young participants have already enrolled, with organisers aiming to grow the intake to over 100. The training is designed to open pathways into clinics, hospitals, and care organisations.
