Mondeor Pupils Win Wits Innovation Award

Mondeor High School pupils have won Best Overall Presentation at a Wits innovation challenge for developing a device to improve safety in informal mining.
The pupils developed GeoPulse, a device that detects vibrations and could help monitor conditions in mining areas.
The challenge, held at Wits University, asked learners to explore ways to improve safety and formalise South Africa’s informal artisanal mining sector.
The team presented their device to judges and received the Best Overall Presentation award.

Western Cape Entrepreneurs Receive Business Support

Twenty Western Cape entrepreneurs have received funding and business support through the 2026 Bambelela Business Awards.
Zola Mbaxa, who runs an audiology business called Just Hearing, won the overall award and received 145-thousand rand to grow her business and expand access to hearing services.
The other winners received funding and support for businesses in sectors including agriculture, transport, fashion, beauty and hospitality.
The programme provides entrepreneurs with funding, equipment, skills and business networks to help them grow and create jobs.

Cape Town will host the World Robot Olympiad International Final in 2028, bringing the global youth robotics competition to Africa for the first time.
The event will be held at the Cape Town International Convention Centre in December, with teams qualifying through competitions around the world.
Interest in the competition has grown in South Africa, from 40 teams in 2010 to about 1,800 teams last year.
More than 500 teams from 91 countries took part in the 2025 international final in Singapore.
