The Earthly Touch Foundation and the Rotary Club of Morningside hosted a green and gold fundraising gala at the Country Club Johannesburg in Woodmead, supporting the Eco Education Centre in Diepsloot.
The centre, built from 110 tonnes of recycled plastic bricks, runs on solar power and uses rainwater harvesting and waterless toilets.
It serves 100 early childhood learners, 100 students needing extra lessons, and 100 unemployed youth and women gaining vocational skills.
Guests learned about sustainable building, water conservation, and repurposing waste into furniture. Each attendee received a spekboom plant to symbolise their support.
The event raised R250,000 for the centre, helping provide education and green skills to the community.

Ethiopia’s Green Legacy Initiative Transforms Landscapes
Story 3
Ethiopia’s Green Legacy Initiative is turning the tide on deforestation, with a goal of planting over 7 billion trees to restore degraded land. So far, more than 30 billion seedlings have been planted, creating thousands of jobs and supporting local plant nurseries.
The program has increased forest cover from around 17 percent to nearly 24 percent, helping prevent soil erosion, store carbon, and cool the atmosphere.
Officials say it is not just about trees. It is transforming landscapes, protecting ecosystems, and supporting communities across the country.
