The Gibela Research Chair at Tshwane University of Technology has been extended for four more years, now running until 2030.
The Chair supports local railcar manufacturing by advancing research, skills development and technology transfer.
Over the past five years, it has produced seven patents, more than 300 research publications, and supported 51 graduates and 16 postdoctoral fellows.
It also empowers small and medium enterprises, trains engineering students, and engages communities to promote STEM education and career opportunities.
The extension reinforces South Africa’s commitment to innovation, local industry growth and developing a skilled workforce in the rail sector.
