Joburg Art Gallery's 145 artworks to be returned

After a decade abroad, 145 priceless artworks from the Johannesburg Art Gallery are coming back to South Africa.
The collection, which includes works by renowned artists like Picasso, Monet, Degas, and Turner, as well as leading South African artists, will be showcased at The Homecoming Exhibition at the Standard Bank Gallery in 2026.
The exhibition will feature pieces spanning centuries, from the 17th century to contemporary works, highlighting the rich cultural dialogue between South Africa and the world.
While the Johannesburg Art Gallery undergoes renovations, which are expected to be completed within two years, Standard Bank will temporarily care for the collection.

Cape Town launches annual Festive Season Cleansing Programme

The City of Cape Town's Urban Waste Management Directorate has launched its annual Festive Season Cleansing Programme, aiming to keep the city clean and prepared for the busy holiday period.
The programme has created over 2,400 job opportunities, including general workers, supervisors, clerks, and community ambassadors, and will deploy an additional 673 workers to support expanded cleansing services.
The programme will prioritise high-traffic areas, including tourist destinations, beachfronts, and business districts, to maintain clean public spaces and support tourism.

Grant Twigg says the programme plays a vital role in supporting tourism and creating work opportunities for Capetonians.

South African coach Bradley Carnell has made history by being named the 2025 MLS Coach of the Year, just months after taking the helm at Philadelphia Union.
Carnell's remarkable debut season saw the Union top the Eastern Conference standings, securing the Supporters' Shield with a league-high 66 points.
Under Carnell's leadership, Philadelphia Union achieved a club record 20 wins in the regular season, with a dominant home performance that saw them lose just one game.
The team's defense was also impressive, allowing a league-best 35 goals and recording 14 clean sheets.
Carnell, a former Bafana Bafana international, has established himself as a rising star in American football, with notable roles at St. Louis CITY SC and New York Red Bulls.
