Government targets ten million trees for Heritage Day drive

The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment is aiming to plant ten million trees as part of its National Greening Programme, with a major rollout planned for Heritage Day.
The update was shared during South Africa’s International Day of Forests event at the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Gardens in Johannesburg, where progress on the initiative was highlighted.
The department says this builds on last year’s achievement of planting one million trees in a single day, as efforts continue to expand greening projects nationwide.

Gauteng opens specialised sports school at Vorentoe

The Gauteng Department of Education has launched the Vorentoe Sports School of Specialisation in Johannesburg, aimed at developing young sporting talent while keeping learners in mainstream education.
The school becomes the province’s 38th specialised institution and offers 11 sporting codes including hockey, cricket, netball, tennis and rugby.
Private sector partner ION Holdings will upgrade classrooms and sports facilities, including new infrastructure and a pavilion.
Officials say the initiative links academic performance with elite sport development across the province.
