Gauteng opens specialised sports school at Vorentoe

The Gauteng Department of Education has launched the Vorentoe Sports School of Specialisation in Johannesburg, aimed at developing young sporting talent while keeping learners in mainstream education.
The school becomes the province’s 38th specialised institution and offers 11 sporting codes including hockey, cricket, netball, tennis and rugby.
Private sector partner ION Holdings will upgrade classrooms and sports facilities, including new infrastructure and a pavilion.
Officials say the initiative links academic performance with elite sport development across the province.

R1.5 billion wastewater plant boosts services in Welkom

The national government has invested one point five billion rand in a new wastewater treatment plant in Welkom in the Free State.
Officials say the facility will help protect water resources while strengthening sanitation services for residents in the town and surrounding areas.
The project is also expected to improve living conditions and restore dignity through more reliable wastewater management.

The Sandton SPCA has hosted its fourth annual golf day at the Houghton Golf Club in Johannesburg to help raise funds for its animal welfare work.
Golfers and sponsors took part in the event on 18 March, supporting the organisation’s ongoing efforts to cover operational costs and care for animals in need.
The SPCA says it relies heavily on donations and fundraising events to sustain its services.
This year’s golf day raised around 70 000 rand, which will go towards day to day running costs and essential improvements.

The service allows items such as VHS tapes, slides, negatives and audio film to be digitised for safer storage and easy sharing.
The lab offers free booking slots ranging from 15 minutes to four hours at the Donelson Branch Library and is part of a wider effort by libraries to preserve personal history.
