Mmakau water project brings relief through rainwater harvesting
Story 1

A community-led initiative in Mmakau north of Pretoria is helping residents cope with long standing water shortages through rainwater harvesting and small scale food gardens.
The project, supported by the Bryanston Catholic Church, was started by retired nurse Cecilia Moloantoa after she returned to her home village during the COVID 19 lockdown.
It provides households with water tanks, guttering and basic plumbing support to collect rainwater, while also encouraging families to grow vegetables for food security.
Since its launch in 2019, the initiative has installed several tanks and continues to expand with support from local partners and sponsors.

Kruger National Park bridge reopens for visitors after repairs
Story 3
The Kruger National Park has reopened the Letaba High Level Bridge, restoring an important travel link between the northern and southern parts of the park.
The bridge was previously closed after flooding damaged the structure and affected movement across the park.
It now allows visitors to move more easily between sections of the park, with a requirement that they remain inside their vehicles while crossing as final safety work continues.

Old style payphones link generations in social experiment
Teaser / Tailpiece story
A new social experiment has installed two old style payphones in the United States to connect young adults and seniors in real time conversations aimed at reducing loneliness.
One phone is placed outside a coffee shop on a Boston University campus, while the other is in a senior housing community in Reno, Nevada, more than 3 200 kilometres away.
When either phone is picked up, it automatically connects the two locations, allowing a Boomer and a Zoomer to speak instantly as part of a project designed to bridge generational divides.
The initiative by Matter Neuroscience focuses on encouraging human connection between groups most affected by social isolation.
