A South African comic book about real scientists has become an award-winning animated short film, inspiring young people to explore STEM.
SuperScientists – Origins, created by CodeMakers, won the 2025 Discovery Award at the Goethe-Institut Science Film Festival, selected from 1,500 entries from 100 countries.
CodeMakers is an NPO that skills young people to be creators, problem solvers, story tellers, and innovators.
The programme has reached tens of thousands of learners through comics, activity books and animation, giving them hands-on science experience and inspiring future careers.

Footprints 4 Sam launches minibus to help children reach medical care

The Footprints 4 Sam Trust is helping vulnerable children in Cape Town get to life-saving medical appointments with the launch of a new “Super Sam Hero” minibus.
Since 2018, the “Sam se Bussies” programme has transported over 16,700 patients, with the new minibus replacing an older bus that served 7,800 children.
Based at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital, the Trust provides reliable transport that reduces stress for families, giving children consistent access to critical care.
Footprints 4 Sam plans to bring its buses to Johannesburg later this year, giving even more children across South Africa a safe ride to the medical care that can change their lives.

DEAFinitely Theatre drama festival organiser Nombuso Wanda says the festival gives deaf artists a platform to showcase their talent, share their stories and be seen and heard in the creative industry.
The 2026 festival, organised by Voices of Different Corners, features performances, workshops, and film screenings in South African Sign Language, offering audiences a chance to experience deaf creativity.
Running from February through March, the festival aims to increase representation and opportunities for the deaf community in arts and culture.
Wanda says the festival creates spaces where deaf voices are celebrated, valued, and inspire the next generation of artists:

Ladysmith Black Mambazo is celebrating the legacy of their late founder, Dr Joseph Shabalala, with a new album, One Voice One World.
The group honoured Dr Shabalala earlier this year, remembering how he brought the sound of isicathamiya to the world while keeping its cultural roots alive.
The album features collaborations with South African musicians Nduduzo Makhathini and Mbuso Khoza, blending different musical styles in a project about unity and heritage.
Ladysmith Black Mambazo is touring internationally until April, and they plan local shows and events when they return, including special performances for Africa Month in May.
