Young learners in Eldorado Park have been recognised for their creativity and problem solving skills during a Youth Hackathon and Chess Challenge hosted by Eldos Robotics and Chess Coding.
The event formed part of Youth Day commemorations and featured teams presenting ideas aimed at addressing everyday community challenges.
Participants were divided into groups and tasked with developing practical solutions using coding, robotics and strategic thinking. The winning team designed a medication reminder device aimed at helping elderly people manage complex treatment schedules more effectively.
Organisers say the initiative is helping to build confidence, critical thinking and innovation skills among young people in the community.

SPAR Delivers Relief to Flood Hit Khayelitsha Communities

SPAR stores in the Western Cape are stepping in to support communities affected by severe weather damage in Khayelitsha.
SUPERSPAR Khayelitsha and SPAR Mandela, working with local leaders, have provided hot meals and distributed thousands of food hampers to families as recovery efforts continue.
More than 5,000 food parcels were handed out in partnership with the Ndithini Ndido Foundation, with ward councillors helping to identify the most affected households.
Store teams also served hot soup to residents as they began cleaning up and rebuilding after the floods.
SPAR management says the response reflects its commitment to standing with the communities it serves during times of need.

Northcliff Skills Programme Helps Rebuild Lives

A community initiative in Northcliff is helping people experiencing homelessness gain practical skills through weekly training in knitting, crochet, sewing and looming.
The programme, run by Tshepo Community Development Initiative, aims to equip participants with skills they can use to contribute to their communities and improve their opportunities.
Participants have already produced Easter bunnies for elderly residents and are making beanies for children and adults.
With 11 donated sewing machines and a growing supply of materials, the project is expanding its training and plans to produce cushions and blankets for people in need.

The research focuses on how targeted stimulation and advanced modelling could improve the way the brain responds to therapy, with potential future applications in rehabilitation and mental health treatment.
