Eastern Cape Water Security Boosted by Invasive Plant Clearing Programme
Story 2
A government-backed programme is helping improve water security in the drought-stricken Eastern Cape by clearing invasive alien plants from dam catchments.
The Kouga Dam, which supplies Nelson Mandela Bay, is sitting at just over 12 percent capacity.
The Gamtoos Irrigation Board is leading the project, which has created jobs for 1,000 locals and is targeting 10,000 hectares of invasive Black Wattle that reduces river flow to dams.
Research shows clearing these plants can boost water flow enough to supply a household for a month under current restrictions.
Wetland restoration and ongoing maintenance are also part of the long-term conservation plan.
