Legends Township Marathon drives youth development

The Legends Township Marathon brought more than 5 000 runners to Eldorado Park Stadium on Sunday to drive youth development and local economic growth.
Organisers used the event to create opportunities for township vendors and small businesses to trade alongside major brands.
Sponsors provided running shoes to young athletes, while the Akani Simbine Foundation began planning structured athletics programmes to support them beyond race day.
Proceeds from the marathon will fund a rugby academy, vegetable gardens and upgrades to sporting facilities in Eldorado Park.

Preparations are underway for the 2026 Johannesburg City Marathon, set for 22 March in Kibler Park, Johannesburg.
The race will feature 42.2 km, 21.1 km, and 10 km distances for participants of all levels.
Proceeds from the marathon will support local NGOs across the city.
Organisers are targeting 8,000 runners and have planned a route through key areas of Gauteng.

The project will include an exhibition and a community archive scheduled for launch in September 2026.
Macrae is collecting flyers, photographs, record sleeves, and written memories from the public to preserve the era’s cultural heritage.
