Researchers at Wits University have launched the RhISOTOPE Project to protect rhinos from poaching by inserting trace radio-active isotopes into their horns.
The isotopes allow authorities to detect horns at airports, harbours and border posts without harming the animals.
Pilot injections were conducted in 2024 and 2025 under controlled conditions, ensuring safety for rhinos and conservation staff.
The project aims to safeguard South Africa’s rhino population by making illegal trade riskier.

The FightRight Mixed Martial Arts Gym in Bryanston, has launched a Youth Programme to teach children and teenagers martial arts, fitness and life skills.
Participants attend structured training sessions that develop goal-setting, teamwork, respect and physical fitness.
The programme includes workshops and community events that encourage family involvement and social interaction.

The City of Cape Town is inviting artists to submit proposals for public artworks at the new Claremont MyCiTi station.
This station, part of Phase 2A of the MyCiTi system, will link Khayelitsha and Mitchells Plain with Wynberg and Claremont.
The City says artworks will make public spaces welcoming, encourage social connection, and reflect Cape Town’s history and culture.
Artists can design works for walls, foyer entrances, platforms, and sculptures, with submissions open until 27 March 2026.
