SKUBU, a fully automated refill store, lets shoppers bring their own containers and buy items like maize meal, rice, sugar, cooking oil and detergent at up to half the usual price.
Customers load money onto a store card and fill only the quantity they need, helping stretch household budgets while reducing single use plastic.
A kilogram of maize meal can cost around R9 compared with roughly R20 at larger retailers.

The Gem Project in Nelson Mandela Bay is helping young people stay in school and build skills for the future.
Its Finding Your Feet programme prepares Grade 7 learners for high school, reaching over 2,400 students across 20 schools.
Older teens who have dropped out get skills training, CV workshops, and access to internships with partner companies.
Mentoring, holiday camps, and partnerships with tertiary institutions also support learning and life skills.
The Project’s initiatives include the Gem Soccer League and seven soup kitchens, supplemented by garden projects
It recently received a R75,000 donation from SPAR Eastern Cape to continue its work.

SPAR Grand Prix Marks 18 Years of Women’s Running

Quick Thinking Strangers Save Baby from Lake Michigan

Two men are being praised after rescuing an infant who was blown into Lake Michigan at Belmont Harbor in Chicago.
Strong winds swept a stroller carrying the baby into the water, causing panic among bystanders.
Thirty year old Lio Cundiff immediately jumped into the lake to reach the sinking stroller and keep it above water.
He was assisted by American Airlines pilot Luis Kapost, who helped steady him until the baby could be safely lifted out.
Both the rescuer and the child were taken to hospital and are reported to be recovering well.
