Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo planted 50 trees at Mushroom Farm Park in Sandton as part of efforts to expand and protect the city’s green spaces.
The initiative brought together different stakeholders and communities, while also educating young people about environmental care.
City Parks says trees play an important role in the urban environment and encourages communities to take responsibility for protecting green spaces.

Cape Town conservationist and runner Karoline Hanks has completed a 194 kilometre ultra marathon to raise funds for the rehabilitation of an injured sea turtle.
She originally aimed to raise R80,000 for Sage, a rare olive ridley turtle being treated after becoming trapped in abandoned fishing gear.
The fundraiser has now collected more than R81,000, covering much of Sage’s rehabilitation costs.
Hanks also used the challenge to raise awareness about the dangers of discarded fishing equipment to marine life.

Young players at Alex Wolves Rugby Club in Alexandra have received new equipment to help them take part in matches and training.
AST Recycling donated more than 20 sets of rugby gear, including socks, shorts and shirts, along with more than 20 size three balls and water bottles to the club’s under nine team.
The support is helping ease some of the club’s equipment challenges and could encourage more children in the community to get involved in rugby.
