Alex Wolves young players receive new rugby gear

Young players at Alex Wolves Rugby Club in Alexandra have received new equipment to help them take part in matches and training.
AST Recycling donated more than 20 sets of rugby gear, including socks, shorts and shirts, along with more than 20 size three balls and water bottles to the club’s under nine team.
The support is helping ease some of the club’s equipment challenges and could encourage more children in the community to get involved in rugby.

Akani Simbine named South Africa’s Sport Star of the Year

South African sprinter Akani Simbine has been named Sport Star of the Year at the 19th South African Sport Awards held at Sun City in the North West.
Simbine received the top honour ahead of Springbok Malcolm Marx and Proteas captain Temba Bavuma.
Other winners included Pieter Coetze, who was named Sportsman of the Year, and Prudence Sekgodiso, who won Sportswoman of the Year.
The Proteas men’s Test team was named Team of the Year.
Simbine’s mother accepted the award on his behalf, saying his achievements continue to inspire young athletes.

Cape Town art auction raises R70,200 for animal rescue

A Cape Town art exhibition and auction has raised a record R70,200 for TEARS Animal Rescue.
The RePAWposed event gave forgotten paintings from TEARS charity shops a new life, with local artists transforming them into new artworks.
Seven rescue dogs also created paintings that were auctioned alongside the other pieces.
The fundraiser raised almost 39 percent more than last year, when R50,500 was collected.
