UJ Panel Empowers Young Women Athletes

University and national women sport veterans have urged young athletes to embrace opportunities, complete their studies, and believe in their dreams to inspire the next generation.
The University of Johannesburg marked Women’s Month and its 20th anniversary with “Breaking Barriers: A 20-Year Journey of Women in Sports”, highlighting resilience, leadership, and empowerment in sport.
Speakers included SASCOC first vice president Lwandile Simelane, former Banyana Banyana captain Amanda Dlamini, and ex-SPAR Proteas captain Bongiwe Msomi.
They shared how education, mentorship, and resilience helped them overcome obstacles like gender stereotypes, underfunding, and unequal support.
The panel stressed that talent combined with academic knowledge and guidance equips young women to lead, seize opportunities, and continue progress in South African sport.

R278,000 Raised for Goldfields TVET Students

A fundraising dinner in Welkom, Free State, has raised R278,250 for Goldfields TVET College students.
The event, held on 21 August 2025, was attended by Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Training, Mimmy Gondwe, who highlighted the importance of partnerships between TVET colleges and industry to equip students with work-ready skills.
Standard Bank contributed R200,000, with additional donations from Absa, Nomnga Properties, Tailormade Trading, and individuals.
The funds will support infrastructure improvements and expanded skills programmes, helping students gain the practical knowledge needed for the modern economy.

On the same day in Akron, Ohio, Keya Jha defeated American grandmaster Bryan Smith at the Joe Yun Memorial tournament, making her the youngest American female to achieve the feat.
Both began playing chess during the COVID pandemic, and Keya is also a black belt in taekwondo and a top-ranked table tennis player in Ohio.
