Major milestone reached in Lesotho Highlands water project
Story 2
South Africa and Lesotho have marked a major milestone in the Lesotho Highlands Water Project with the official launch of a second tunnel boring machine, marking accelerated progress on one of Africa’s most ambitious cross-border infrastructure projects.
The Minister of Water and Sanitation, Pemmy Majodina, and Lesotho’s Minister of Natural Resources, Mohlomi Moleko, on Monday unveiled the Polihali TBM in Mokhotlong, in Lesotho, a milestone that underscores the R9.2 billion project’s shift from preparation to full-scale underground construction.
The second phase of the project is designed to boost water supply to Gauteng while strengthening Lesotho’s energy capacity through the planned Oxbow Hydropower Scheme.
Once completed, the Polihali tunnel will facilitate the transfer of significantly larger volumes of water, enhancing regional water security, while strengthening Lesotho’s energy capacity through the planned Oxbow Hydropower Scheme.

The initiative forms part of a broader strategy to enhance sustainable tourism, which contributed R28.6 billion to the provincial economy in 2023 and supported over 257,000 jobs.
Meyer says the province is increasingly prioritising high-value, experience-driven tourism, with the new guides helping to diversify offerings and attract targeted visitor segments.
