SA to plant 10 million trees on Heritage Day

The Deputy minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Bernice Swarts, will lead a nationwide campaign to plant ten million trees today, in celebration of Heritage Day.
The drive forms part of the Presidetial One Billion Trees Programme, which aims to mobilise South African citizens, including government, business and the private sector, to mitigate climate change.
Swarts will lead the main event at Freedom Park in Pretoria, with additional programs scheduled to take place in Soweto.
Trees will be planted in safe spaces across all nine provinces, including schools, hospitals, colleges, police stations, churches, parks and residential areas.

Cape Town public pools extend access for school holidays

Cape Town’s public swimming pools will be open daily during the September school holidays, giving residents and visitors an opportunity to enjoy the municipal facilities.
The pools will operate from 10am to 5pm each day from the 23rd of September.
Mayoral committee member for Community Services and Health, Francine Higham, says the Westridge, Bellville Central, Mnandi, Athlone and Vulindela swimming pools will remain closed for essential maintenance.

Cape Town to host World Robot Olympiad final in 2028

Cape Town will host the World Robot Olympiad International Final in 2028, bringing one of the world’s largest youth robotics competitions to Africa for the first time.
The global event will take place at the Cape Town International Convention Centre during the second week of December 2028, with top teams qualifying through World Robot Olympiad competitions around the world.
Participation in WRO South Africa has grown from 40 teams when the national competition launched in 2010 to approximately 1 800 teams in 2025.
The 2025 international final in Singapore attracted over 500 teams from 91 countries.

The eThekwini Municipality has welcomed Ethiopian Airlines’ decision to launch a daily non-stop air service connecting Durban directly to Ethiopia from the 11th of December.
The new route will connect Durban directly with Ethiopian Airlines’ main hub in Ethiopia, opening access to more than 130 destinations across Africa.
The route will make travel between KwaZulu-Natal and East Africa more convenient by removing the need for an additional connection through Johannesburg or Cape Town.
The municipality’s spokesperson, Senzelwe Mzila, says this reinforces the province’s position as a key gateway into Africa
