EU Cracks Down on Plastic Pellet Pollution with New Accountability Rules

The European Parliament has adopted new rules to reduce pollution from plastic pellets, known as nurdles.
Transport and handling companies will be held accountable for spills, required to report leaks, and responsible for clean-up within set timeframes.
The rules apply to all firms moving more than five tonnes of pellets per year in the EU, including non-European companies.
New obligations include improved packaging, clear labelling, and mandatory risk assessments to prevent microplastic pollution.
Land freight companies have two years to comply, while maritime operators have three years to meet the new standards.
