UK charity prescribes fishing to support mental health, wins King’s Award
Story 3
A UK-based charity is using fishing as a tool to support mental health. Tackling Minds, founded by Dave Lyons, helps people with anxiety and depression through guided angling sessions.
Partnering with the National Health Service, the program has so far supported more than 2,300 participants, providing all equipment and coaching.
Lyons, who credits fishing with helping him recover from years of mental health struggles and alcohol addiction, said volunteers are key to the program’s success.
Recently, Tackling Minds received the King’s Award for Voluntary Service, often described as the “MBE for groups.” The charity plans to expand its services, bringing the calming benefits of fishing to more communities across the UK.
