SA to be represented at FIRST Tech Challenge World Championships
Story 1
South Africa will be well represented at the FIRST Tech Challenge World Championships when 13 high school students from Cape Town take on teams from around the globe in Houston at the end of April.
The students earned their spot for the second year running after placing third in the Robot Games and winning the Inspire Award at the South African National Championships in Cape Town.
They design, build, and program their own robots, while also running outreach programmes that mentor learners and train 48 coaches to start new robotics teams.
On the world stage, they will showcase South Africa’s talent in engineering and technology and work to expand access to STEM skills for young people back home.

Tladi community joins SANCA Soweto’s “ay No to Drugs” event

Community members in Tladi, Soweto gathered earlier this month for SANCA Soweto’s “Say No to Drugs” event.
The event introduced residents to the services of the Tladi Day Clinic and provided information on tackling substance abuse.
Participants attended talks, engaged in open dialogue, and learned how to access support programmes.
Recovering drug user Lennon Mkhwanazi shared his journey, showing others that recovery is possible and encouraging them to access SANCA’s programmes for support.

Footprints 4 Sam launches new minibus to help Cape Town children

The Footprints 4 Sam Trust is helping vulnerable children in Cape Town get to life-saving medical appointments with the launch of a new “Super Sam Hero” minibus.
Since 2018, the “Sam se Bussies” programme has transported over 16,700 patients, with the new minibus replacing an older bus that served 7,800 children.
Based at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital, the Trust provides reliable transport that reduces stress for families, giving children consistent access to critical care.
Footprints 4 Sam plans to bring its buses to Johannesburg later this year, giving even more children across South Africa a safe ride to the medical care that can change their lives.

Limpopo youth turn e-waste into jobs

Young people in Limpopo are finding new ways to earn a living by recycling electronic waste through the E-Waste for Youth Employment Programme.
The one-year initiative, led by the International Labour Organization and funded by the government of Japan, trains youth to turn discarded electronics into income and green jobs.
The programme has reached 22 municipalities, giving participants practical skills and experience in the growing green economy.
