Refill grocery store expands reach
Story 2
A refill-based grocery retailer that helps families save money on everyday essentials is preparing to expand into more South African communities.
SKUBU currently operates stores at 2 malls in Diepsloot, in Johannesburg, where shoppers bring their own containers and buy staples such as maize meal, rice and cooking oil in the quantities they can afford.
By cutting packaging costs, the model offers prices that can be up to 60 percent lower than major retailers.
The company is now exploring expansion through its smaller SKUBU Nyana container-store format, designed to reach underserved communities without full retail infrastructure.
