South African West Coast Mining Documentary Earns Cannes Nomination
Story 2
A South African documentary about mining along the West Coast has been nominated for a Cannes Film Award in the Work in Progress category. The film, Out of Mined, looks at the long term impact of diamond and mineral mining on coastal dunes, beaches and marine ecosystems, as well as the communities living in the area.
The production includes perspectives from local residents, scientists and environmental groups, and was developed through extensive filming along the West Coast and Richtersveld. It also reflects ongoing concerns about new mining applications and limited coastal protection in the region.
The documentary will premiere in Cape Town before screening at international film festivals.

Homeless Restoration Drive Reconnects Pretoria Residents With Families
Story 3
A restoration initiative led by the South African Police Service in Pretoria is helping people living on the streets reconnect with their families through a structured support programme.
The Homeless Restoration Programme brings together police, social workers, NGOs and community organisations to provide temporary shelter, counselling and rehabilitation for participants who voluntarily join the process.
The first group of eight beneficiaries has entered the programme while arrangements are made for family reunifications in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, the Western Cape and other provinces.
Officials say the initiative focuses on support and engagement rather than forced removal, with plans to expand assistance through partner organisations.
