Emmarentia Upper Dam Upgrade Boosts Flood Safety and Community Pride
Story 1
The City of Johannesburg has completed the Emmarentia Upper Dam rehabilitation project, improving storm water management and protecting a beloved green space.
The work, finished in December 2024, included heightening the dam wall and extending the spillway.
This increases the dam’s capacity to handle heavy rains from the Melville catchment area, reducing flood risks for nearby residents.
Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo says the upgrade is a long-term investment in safety and environmental sustainability.
The project was a joint effort between Johannesburg Roads Agency and city departments, with local parks managing implementation.
While the new spillway allows pedestrians to cross, it is not designed for vehicles.
Officials encourage the community to take pride in the revitalised space and help keep it clean and welcoming for all.

Warmth and Hope for Ikholwa Children’s Home Through Blanket Donation
Story 3
As temperatures drop in Gauteng, the 67 Minutes Nelson Mandela team brought warmth and hope to Ikholwa Hope for Our Children’s Home with a donation of 40 colourful blankets on June 10.
These blankets were crafted by the 67 Blankets KnitWits, volunteers who contributed to the world’s largest blanket unveiled earlier this year.
Although the children were at school, the home’s staff received the blankets with deep gratitude. Ikholwa cares for 16 vulnerable children aged four to sixteen, providing a family-like environment with housemothers and assistants.
General Manager Louise Barry-Taylor said the blankets would bring comfort, especially during cold evenings.
