Young Collectors Drive Fresh Energy Into Global Art Market
Story 2
Despite a softer global art market, this year’s Art Basel fair in Basel, Switzerland, saw major sales and promising trends.
A David Hockney painting sold for up to R310 million, while younger collectors are entering the scene with bold purchases.
UBS reports a shift in buyer behaviour, with rising interest in artworks under R950,000 and a growing number of 30-somethings building serious collections.
Experts say a massive wealth transfer is set to reshape the market. The fair, featuring over 4,000 artists, also spotlighted emerging talents like Joyce Joumaa, winner of the 2025 Baloise Art Prize.

Story OneDiepsloot Welcomes New Eco-Friendly Crèche Built from Plastic Bottles
Story 3
A new early childhood centre built from 58,000 plastic bottles has opened in Diepsloot, marking a unique step forward in community development and environmental sustainability.
The crèche, officially opened on June 21, was constructed through a collaboration between Cherith Projects and Earthly Touch.
At the heart of the initiative are Colin and Lisa Ekman, a retired couple whose ongoing commitment to Diepsloot has transformed plastic waste into a lasting community resource.
Their efforts have led to the removal of 32 tons of plastic from the environment and the establishment of 40 vegetable gardens benefiting elderly women in the area.
The project also includes teacher training for the crèche staff and plans to launch a second crèche and an adult education centre on Nelson Mandela Day.
