Story OneDiepsloot Welcomes New Eco-Friendly Crèche Built from Plastic Bottles
Story 1
A new early childhood centre built from 58,000 plastic bottles has opened in Diepsloot, marking a unique step forward in community development and environmental sustainability.
The crèche, officially opened on June 21, was constructed through a collaboration between Cherith Projects and Earthly Touch.
At the heart of the initiative are Colin and Lisa Ekman, a retired couple whose ongoing commitment to Diepsloot has transformed plastic waste into a lasting community resource.
Their efforts have led to the removal of 32 tons of plastic from the environment and the establishment of 40 vegetable gardens benefiting elderly women in the area.
The project also includes teacher training for the crèche staff and plans to launch a second crèche and an adult education centre on Nelson Mandela Day.

AI Foot Scanner Offers Early Warning for Heart Failure
Story 3
A new AI-powered foot scanner developed in the UK could save lives by detecting early signs of heart failure.
The bedside device takes 1,800 photos of a person’s feet to spot fluid buildup called oedema—one of the top indicators of heart trouble.
In a study with 26 patients, the scanner predicted hospital admissions up to 19 days in advance, allowing early intervention.
With a shortage of heart failure nurses, experts say this device acts like a “virtual nurse” monitoring patients’ health and could reduce hospital visits.
Most patients chose to keep the scanner after the trial, showing promise for improving care for the one million Brits living with heart failure.
