A digital platform has been launched in South Africa to track recyclable materials and manage transactions between waste pickers and buy-back centers.
BanQu which is supported by PETCO and The Coca-Cola Foundation, sends waste pickers SMS with receipts giving them clear records of their earnings.
Already live in 10 centres, the system has tracked over 2,350 tonnes of recycled material worth 5.7-million-rand.
The platform aims to integrate informal workers into the recycling economy and promote a more inclusive and sustainable future.

Bayanda Walaza Win Gold At The 2025 World University Games

South African sprinter Bayanda Walaza has won the Gold medal in the Men's 100m at the 2025 World University Games.
The Paris 2024-Olympian and world junior champion clinched the medal with a time of 10.16s.
Walaza became just the 9th South African to break the 10-second barrier in the 100m when he clocked 9.94 in Zagreb in May.
