The Chinese Consulate General in Johannesburg has donated R250,000 towards Gauteng’s 2025 top-performing matric learners, as part of its ongoing support for education and youth development in the country.

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi and the MEC for Education Matome Chiloane expressed gratitude to the Chinese Consulate for the unwavering support towards South Afrca's education.

Lesufi highlighted the countries’ long-standing partnership, including exchange programmes that give South African students the chance to study in China in support of education and youth development.

Air Europa to launch direct flights between Johannesburg and Madrid

The Spanish carrier Air Europa will launch a new flight between South Africa and Spain, with flights scheduled between Madrid and Johannesburg on the 24th of June, further enhancing connectivity between Europe and South Africa.

The airline was granted rights to operate three weekly flights between Spain and South Africa after Spain’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation initiated a process to allocate traffic rights between the two countries.”

Air Europa boasts one of the most modern and sustainable air fleets in the industry, made up of 59 aircraft.

Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy honours top achievers

The Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls
honoured its top achievers at an awards ceremony, which was held at its Henley-on-Klip campus in Gauteng, celebrating academic excellence, resilience and leadership.

The academy has once again achieved a 100% matric pass rate, with 11 learners from the Class of 2025 earning four distinctions each.
All 44 candidates secured bachelor’s degree passes, with the class recording an impressive overall average of 76%, reflecting a strong and consistent academic performance across the cohort.

Executive Director Gugu Ndebele says the achievement reflects the strength and potential of young women who often come from underprivileged backgrounds.

The school has continued to fundamentally change the life trajectories of young women from disadvantaged backgrounds, who may otherwise have been left behind.
