MIT develops 3D printer that makes electric motors in a single step
Teaser / Tailpiece story
Researchers at MIT have created a multi-material 3D-printing platform capable of producing fully functional electric machines in a single step.
Using five different materials, the team printed a linear motor in just three hours with material costs of only 50 cents.
The motor performed as well as or better than similar devices made with more complex manufacturing methods.
The printer works layer by layer, combining conductive and magnetic materials with minimal post-processing. This breakthrough could allow factories to produce motors, robotics parts and medical devices onsite, reducing costs, delays and waste.
