Anonymous donor gives 21 kilograms of gold to Osaka for water pipes
Teaser / Tailpiece story
An anonymous resident of Osaka has donated 21 kilograms of gold bars to help repair the city’s worn-out water pipes, surprising officials and leaving them “speechless.”
The gold, worth roughly 560 million yen, will fund the replacement of about 2 kilometres of the city’s 260-kilometre municipal water network built during the post-war economic boom. Some sections have already caused sinkholes along city roads.
Mayor Hideyuki Yokoyama confirmed the donation will be strictly used for pipe replacement, in line with the donor’s wishes.
