Free epilepsy surgery offered at Groote Schuur Hospital
Story 2
Patients with severe epilepsy had access to free brain surgery last Saturday at Groote Schuur Hospital. The procedures were part of the Rise programme, Restoration of Independence through Surgery for Epilepsy. The programme is led by Dr Aayesha Soni, South Africa’s first female adult epileptologist.
Dr Soni worked alongside neurosurgeons Dr Sally Rothemeyer and Dr Jesse Bulabula. They performed temporal lobectomies, removing the part of the brain that triggers seizures. Recovery is typically fast, and many patients may become seizure-free.
Epilepsy affects more South Africans than HIV, yet public access to surgery is extremely limited. The free surgical day gave patients who cannot afford private care a chance at independence and improved quality of life.

A mother in East London seeking cleaning work received a food parcel last week from Marion Peake and her family. The family, founders of the Helping Those In Need NPO, noticed the woman daily on their way to daycare and wanted to provide immediate assistance to help her feed her children.
The woman was visibly moved by the gesture. Marion Peake said the act also teaches their children the importance of helping those in need and shows how small interventions can make a meaningful difference.

Florida zoo team helps save Zimbabwe rhino’s sight
Teaser / Tailpiece story
A team from the Palm Beach Zoo & Conservation Society in the USA, travelled to Zimbabwe to treat a white rhino named Thunza suffering from a severe parasitic eye infection.
The rhino was outside Hwange National Park, where the Community Rhino Conservation Initiative reintroduces southern white rhinos onto communal land. Using food and gentle desensitisation, the team earned Thunza’s trust, allowing them to administer eye drops and other care, and train local staff to continue treatment if needed.
The southern white rhinoceros is the most numerous rhino subspecies and is widely dispersed across Africa, with ongoing conservation efforts helping to secure its future.
