SSA Conference Puts Spotlight on Language and Democracy

The inaugural Linguistics Society of South Africa Conference at the Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg has wrapped up after three days of thought-provoking discussions.
Delegates explored how language shapes democracy, education, culture and identity.
Deputy Minister Dickson Masemola called multilingual communication vital for inclusive governance, while Justice Department Director-General Doctor Mashabane announced plans to elevate the role of court interpreters.
The final day highlighted African languages in education and the economy, with experts urging their wider use in teaching, publishing and business.
Organisers say the gathering showed that language is not only a tool of communication, but also a driver of democracy, transformation and African knowledge.

Paarl Man Wins 2025 Boerewors Championship

Roberto-Rui Agrela from Paarl has been crowned the 2025 Boerewors Champion.
The 33-year-old car salesman secured the title at the national finale held at Cabo Beach Club in Cape Town on 23 August.
He outperformed more than 2 300 entrants, with his recipe judged best by the South African Chefs Association.
Agrela received a Toyota Fortuner and R20 000 in cash, while his winning boerewors will be available in Shoprite and Checkers stores from 5 September.
The event once again highlighted South Africa’s passion for boerewors, a favourite at braais across the country.
