Pretoria Puppy First To Receive Minimally Invasive Heart Procedure
Story 1
A four month old puppy has become the first patient at Pretoria’s Onderstepoort Veterinary Academic Hospital to undergo a minimally invasive procedure for a congenital heart condition.
Dexter was born with patent ductus arteriosus, which causes abnormal blood flow between the heart and lungs.
Instead of open chest surgery, vets used a catheter to place a device that closed the affected blood vessel from inside the body.
Dexter has recovered well, and the procedure is now available at Onderstepoort for suitable patients.
