The Castle of Good Hope will open its doors for free on Heritage Day, September 24, to celebrate South Africans who fought for freedom but whose names are not widely recognised.
The 2025 programme focuses on storytelling, remembrance, and recognition of those forced into exile during apartheid and those who died far from home.
Events will include music, dance, indigenous cuisine, the Castle Key Ceremony, cannon firing, and workshops exploring spirituality and resistance.

A former Johns Hopkins engineering student in the United States is turning discarded red solo cups from parties into soft sweaters and beanies through her New Normal Collective.
The cups are shredded and processed into yarn using a non-toxic method and 3D knitting, which eliminates fabric waste and prevents microplastic shedding.
Natural pastel shades come from the cups themselves, with no artificial dyes used.
The yarn is produced in North Carolina and Virginia before being knitted into garments in Brooklyn, offering an innovative, eco-friendly approach to fashion.
The innovation not only gives a second life to single-use plastics but also showcases a sustainable model for fashion production.
