The City of Johannesburg has committed R9 million to replace damaged sewer pipes at the Helen Joseph Women’s Hostel.
The long-awaited upgrade aims to address years of blockages, flooding, and poor sanitation that have affected residents.
The project will replace about 850 metres of sewer pipelines and several manholes, improving the hostel’s wastewater system.
Ward 107 councillor Floyd Ngwenya welcomed the development, saying it would restore dignity to residents who have endured difficult living conditions.
Johannesburg Water confirmed that the project will also create local jobs, employing around 10 workers and involving two SMMEs.

Google South Africa and the Pan South African Language Board have launched a glossary of 100 AI terms translated into isiZulu, isiXhosa, and Afrikaans.
The project aims to make AI concepts accessible in South Africa’s major languages, promoting inclusion and understanding.
Each translation was reviewed by language experts to ensure accuracy and cultural relevance.
The glossary, available on GitHub, includes complex terms like “hallucination” and “deepfake,” adapted to local contexts.
It builds on Google’s previous Swahili glossary and supports wider efforts to strengthen indigenous languages in the digital space.
