Ameshoff Street in Braamfontein Gets a Vibrant Makeover

Braamfontein’s Ameshoff Street has been revitalised through the Ameshoff Street Identity and Placemaking Project, enhancing art, architecture, and urban life in the area.
The R3 million upgrade includes new lighting, public benches, and a mosaic watershed fountain, aimed at boosting safety, pedestrian activity, and a sense of community.
The project is the result of a partnership between the Braamfontein Improvement District, Liberty Group, Joburg Theatre, and CUMC, with Wits University supporting the initiative.
Phase 1 of road improvements on nearby Jorissen Street is also underway to enhance safety and functionality for all road users.

The National Research Foundation has secured R86.7 million to fund 10 African-led climate research projects.
The initiative, launched in partnership with the Belmont Forum, aims to strengthen collaboration across the continent in tackling environmental challenges.
The selected projects will focus on key themes such as pollution, disaster preparedness, and the link between water, energy, food, and health. Each project will run for three years and bring together 126 researchers from 16 African countries and international partners.
The NRF says the funding highlights South Africa’s growing role in supporting solutions-driven research that addresses the impact of climate change across Africa.
