Everest climbers use new gas for faster climb
Story 3
Four British climbers became the first to climb Mount Everest using Xenon gas to speed up their acclimatisation to high altitudes. Normally, mountaineers spend weeks or even months on the mountain so their bodies can adjust to the thin air before trying to reach the summit. Before their expedition, the climbers inhaled Xenon gas in Germany, which helped their bodies adapt more quickly. The climbers trained at home by sleeping in special tents that simulated high-altitude conditions. With this preparation, they managed to climb the 8,848-metre peak in less than five days after leaving London. Like most climbers, they used supplemental oxygen during their ascent.
