Diesel Prices Set to Fall, Bringing Relief for Gauteng Drivers and Industries
Story 1
Wholesale diesel prices could drop by up to 61 cents per litre, says the Central Energy Fund.
Inland prices may fall to around R18.37, with coastal regions seeing even lower costs near R17.58 per litre — levels last seen in early 2022.
This drop is good news for sectors like farming, transport, and logistics, especially in Gauteng, where fuel costs are a major expense.
Petrol prices are also expected to decrease by about 25 to 30 cents per litre.
Paraffin prices will fall too, easing costs for many low-income households as winter sets in.
These declines come amid a stable rand and lower global oil prices, but experts warn fuel prices can still be volatile.
The official new prices will be announced at the end of May and take effect on 4 June.

New Research Brings Safer, Easier HIV Treatment to Newborns in South Africa
Story 2
Groundbreaking research led by Professor Adrie Bekker in Cape Town has found two safe and effective ways to give the important HIV medicine dolutegravir to newborn babies.
Until now, babies under 28 days old had no clear guidance on how to take this preferred HIV treatment, recommended by the WHO and widely used in South Africa. The PETITE-DTG study tested two new forms: a dissolved dispersible tablet and a mint-flavoured film that melts on the tongue.
Both methods proved safe and achieved drug levels similar to adults, with mothers reporting the film strip as simple and stress-free to use. All babies in the study remained HIV negative.
These promising results are set to influence updated WHO guidelines, bringing hope for improved and easier HIV care for newborns across the country and beyond.
