The Wits Donald Gordon Medical Centre in Parktown has introduced Africa’s first liver perfusion machine, a R2.7 million technology that could improve liver transplant outcomes and help save more lives.
The system allows donor livers to be preserved, monitored and assessed outside the body before transplantation, helping doctors determine whether organs are suitable for surgery. Medical experts say it can improve organ viability, reduce complications and increase the number of successful transplants.
The first procedure using the machine is expected to take place in the coming weeks.
