Moths' Flight Directed by Stars
Story 3
Bogong moths in Australia use stars to guide their 620-mile migration to cool mountain caves. They travel at night during warmer months, then return home to breed and die. A new study found they are the first invertebrates known to navigate using stars over long distances. Scientists tested this using a special flight simulator. When the stars looked normal, the moths flew in the right direction. When the stars were scrambled, the moths got confused. Their brain activity also changed with different star patterns. This shows they rely on the night sky to find their way.
